Just a few minutes south of the Romantic Zone,
Conchas Chinas is one of my favorite locations for
Puerto Vallarta engagement photos.
Because of its small coves, rocks and tropical surroundings,
every part of the beach can create a different atmosphere.

Instead of one long, completely open beach, the coastline
is broken into smaller areas surrounded by rocks,
tropical vegetation and natural pools.

As a result, we can create photographs that feel completely
different without spending half of the session traveling
between locations.

At sunset, everything becomes softer. The rocks reflect the
warm light while the mountains slowly disappear into layers
in the distance.

Meanwhile, the Pacific becomes a beautiful cinematic background
that works especially well for photographs with movement.

This is where I usually recommend going when a couple tells me:
We want something romantic, natural and close to the ocean.

If the beach tells one side of Puerto Vallarta’s story,
downtown tells the other.

Cobblestone streets, white façades, red tile roofs,
weathered walls, bougainvillea, staircases and glimpses
of the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe create photographs
that immediately feel connected to Mexico.

I particularly love this part of Vallarta for couples who
want something a little more editorial.

Instead of spending the entire session posing in one location,
we can simply walk. Whenever the light looks beautiful,
we stop and create something.

Some of my favorite sessions begin in Centro and gradually
make their way toward the ocean.

Consequently, the final gallery feels less like a traditional
photoshoot and more like a memory of spending an afternoon
together in Puerto Vallarta.

Zona Romántica has a completely different personality.
It feels alive.

People walk through the streets while restaurants open
their doors, taxis pass and music comes from somewhere nearby.
At the same time, the ocean waits at the end of almost every street.

For some couples, that energy is exactly what makes the
photographs interesting. In addition, Zona Romántica allows
us to combine several environments without spending the
session driving between locations.

For example, we can begin between the colorful streets of the
Romantic Zone, walk toward Los Muertos Pier and eventually
finish with our feet in the water.

As a result, one session can include Mexican architecture,
city life, palm trees, beach and sunset.

Rather than trying to remove every person from the background,
I sometimes allow the movement around us to become part of
the image. Consequently, the photographs can feel more
spontaneous and honest.

Sometimes you do not need architecture, restaurants or colorful
streets. Instead, you simply want a beautiful Mexican beach.

Playa Las Gemelas is one of the places I recommend most often
when someone tells me exactly that. Moreover, the water can
have beautiful blue and turquoise tones while the surrounding
vegetation creates a distinctly tropical atmosphere.

There is also enough room to move. For family photography,
this is especially important because children can run while
parents interact naturally with them.

Therefore, the session does not need to become a sequence
of perfectly posed family portraits.

For couples, on the other hand, the simplicity of the landscape
keeps the attention exactly where it should be:
on the two of you.

Mismaloya feels dramatically different from downtown
Puerto Vallarta because the mountains of the Sierra Madre
descend directly toward the ocean.

Jungle, rocks, beach and distant mountains overlap in the
same landscape. For photography, those layers create depth
and atmosphere that can feel almost cinematic.

Additionally, Mismaloya is an excellent option for couples
and families staying around Boca de Tomatlán or along the
southern coast who would rather experience this side of
Vallarta than drive back into the city.

The best photographs here often happen when we stop trying
to make the location look perfect and allow the environment
to become part of the experience.

Wind, water, movement and bare feet in the sand all become
part of the story.

Ultimately, those little imperfections are often what make
an image feel alive.

Sayulita has its own rhythm. Although it is close to Puerto
Vallarta, the town has a completely different personality.

Narrow streets, colorful papel picado, murals, surfboards,
cafés, small shops and tropical plants create a relaxed,
bohemian atmosphere.

For couples who want photographs with color and movement,
it is one of my favorite locations in Riviera Nayarit.
Additionally, the streets and beach can easily be combined
within the same session.

Rather than staying in one spot, we explore.

First, we walk through the streets and stop whenever the light
catches my attention. Afterwards, we slowly make our way
toward the Pacific.

As a result, the photographs feel like a small visual story
of spending an afternoon together in Mexico.

Away from the energy of Sayulita’s main beach is a smaller
cove known as Playa de los Muertos.

Even the short walk to reach it changes the mood.
Compared with the center of town, this part of Sayulita
can feel more intimate.

The beach is surrounded by vegetation and rocks. Toward
the end of the afternoon, the light also becomes softer
and warmer.

For couples who love Sayulita but want their photographs
to feel slightly more private and romantic, this can be
a beautiful alternative to the main beach.

Furthermore, the location works especially well for photographs
that involve movement: walking, running into the water or
simply holding each other while the waves move behind you.

Often, the moments between the photographs become the photographs.

Carricitos feels different from the colorful center of Sayulita.
It is quieter, more open and more raw.

Because there are fewer visual distractions, the coastline,
sky and couple naturally become the protagonists.

I particularly like this location for people who are comfortable
allowing the session to become a little unpredictable.

That might mean walking barefoot, getting clothes slightly wet,
sitting in the sand or simply letting the wind do whatever
it wants.

After all, not every photograph needs to be controlled.
Sometimes the most memorable images happen when nothing is.

Punta Mita has a completely different visual language.
While Puerto Vallarta can feel vibrant and urban, this part
of the coast often feels slower and more spacious.

Around El Anclote, boats, palm trees and the Pacific create
a relaxed coastal atmosphere. Therefore, it works particularly
well for families who want natural photographs without traveling
between several locations.

Everything is relatively close, which means we can spend more
time creating photographs and less time moving from place to place.

For couples, meanwhile, I like incorporating the boats and
coastline subtly. This gives the photographs a sense of place
without allowing the background to become more important
than the people.

Litibú is for people who want the ocean without too much
visual noise.

Wide beaches, long horizons and fewer urban elements make
it possible to create photographs that feel clean and timeless.

Because there are fewer distractions, the smallest moments
become more important.

A hand, a look, hair moving in the wind, children running
toward their parents or two people walking at the edge of
the ocean can become the entire story.

For that reason, the simplicity of Litibú is especially
beautiful for family sessions, maternity photography and
engagement portraits.

There is no single answer because the best location depends
on the atmosphere you want to create.

For romantic Puerto Vallarta engagement photos
with an intimate beach, rocks and beautiful Pacific light,
I usually recommend Conchas Chinas.

However, if you want photographs that feel unmistakably Mexican,
I love Gringo Gulch and Centro.

Alternatively, couples looking for color and a more bohemian
atmosphere may prefer Sayulita.

Finally, if you want something quieter, spacious and elegant,
Punta Mita and Litibú are beautiful options.

Choosing what to wear for
Puerto Vallarta engagement photos
should begin with one simple idea: you need to feel comfortable
enough to move naturally.

Therefore, I normally recommend clothing that moves well,
including linen, cotton, flowing dresses and lightweight shirts.

For the beach, neutral and earthy colors work beautifully
with the landscape. For example, cream, white, sand, olive,
brown and softer shades of blue photograph beautifully
near the Pacific.

In downtown Puerto Vallarta or Sayulita, however, stronger
colors can also work because the environment already has
so much personality.

More importantly, whatever you choose should still feel
like something you would actually wear.

For most beach sessions, I prefer to begin approximately
45 to 60 minutes before sunset.

First, this gives us soft golden light. Afterwards,
the colors of sunset begin to appear over the Pacific.

Finally, there are a few beautiful minutes of blue hour
when the sky becomes cooler and the atmosphere becomes
more intimate.

For downtown Puerto Vallarta and Sayulita, however,
early morning can also be beautiful.

The streets are quieter and the temperature is usually
more comfortable. In addition, the softer morning light
can work beautifully between buildings and cobblestone streets.

Ultimately, the time we choose is never random.

From the streets of Vallarta to the Pacific

Sometimes, the story is simply two people who love each
other and want to remember what this chapter of their
life felt like.

Some of my favorite sessions combine two different environments.
For example, we might begin walking through old Puerto Vallarta
while the afternoon light filters through the streets.

Afterwards, we follow the city toward the ocean.

Shoes come off, the light becomes softer and the sun
slowly disappears over the Pacific.

At that point, the session often stops feeling like a photoshoot.

Instead, it becomes a memory.

I do not believe the most meaningful photographs come
from perfect poses. Instead, they come from connection,
movement and the reactions that happen between one
photograph and the next.

Sometimes it is something making you laugh when you were
supposed to be serious. Other times, it is the way someone
reaches for your hand without thinking about it.

With families, it may be your children running back toward
you. Meanwhile, during a couples session, the wind might
completely change whatever we thought we were going to photograph.

Those unexpected moments are exactly what I am looking for.
